My Virginia Creeper has no leaves

Postby Claire62 » 20 Jun 2010 15:00

Hope you can help?

My Virginia Creeper which has covered my house for the last 20 years has no leaves this year. The few that it (less than a dozen) did produce curled up and died. Could the frost have killed all the new shoots????

Its south facing, and the main trunk is approx 10cm wide. So quite a big beast.

Is this the end of it????

Kind Regards

Claire

Hello Claire,

Strange one this, Parthenocissus are hardy climbers and such a mature specimen should certainly not have been troubled by last winter. They are also usually trouble free when it comes to pests and diseases. I think you just have to wait now and see if it produces any new foliage next spring.
You could try scraping away at the bark with a sharp knife in two or three places to see if it is still green under the bark, if it is, it is still alive.

Hiya
Just to say thank you for replying. Yes I think its a bit strange. I did wonder if it could have been vine weevil?

Ok, will do a scrape test tomorrow.

Kind Regards
