Most commonly dark reddish-purple but occasionally white, yellow or purple upright or outward facing flowers appear above the whorls of plain green leaves in spring. Choose this cultivar if you are not a fan of leaf variegation. Ideal woodland plants which are native to east and north-eastern areas of North America. It is very hardy and will thrive in deep moist but well drained, preferably acidic soil.
- Garden care:Plant rhizomes 5cm deep and 5cm apart in autumn. Once planted they are best left undisturbed so they can build up their numbers. Mulch in the autumn with a generous layer of leafmould.
