Lily Trouble

Postby Furasato » 21 Sep 2007 12:46

Hi, I have always had trouble with my lilies. I bought a tiny one at the market for 50p and it's grown fantastically but has never flowered since. This happens with every one I've bought over the years. What am I doing wrong?!

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your non-flowering lilies.

Firstly I must question the quality of the stock you are purchasing. If you were to purchase from a specialist Lily supplier or decent garden centre you might find better results than those achieved from the market stall supplier. Do a trial, compare flowering performance of Lily bulbs from different suppliers.

What conditions are you growing the Lilies in? Are they getting enough light? (Lilies prefer good light levels for best flowering performance)

How about feeding? Feed regularly during the growing season but not at all in the dormant period.

Watering is also important, again plenty of water from March to September, never allowing the compost or soil to dry out. But avoid overwatering in the winter which can cause bulbs to rot.

Hope I have pointed you in the right direction for successful flowering.
